PORTFOLIO IMAGE PROPERTIES

IMAGE SIZE refers to the resolution expressed as  Points Per Inch (ppi)    X outer dimensions expressed as Pixel scale (px).

  • We work with two sizes:    Master Images: 300ppi X  maximum pixel scale after cropping     Flickr Ideal Standard: 72ppi 500px
  • Photoshop / Image /  Image Size  -  enables you to change the pixel scale and  convert  pixels dimensions into inches or centimeters.
  • Ideal standards and image size requirements vary with function.  When entering a competition or submitting your art images to a web site look for requirements or “ideal image standard”.
  • For a list of commonly used standards:  click on   Image Size Standards which takes you to  C. Hagen Studio, where several samples and properties are listed, including    ZAPP  and   JAS   art competition services.
  • You can search for ideal standards.   Google  “Flickr ideal image standard”  -  one result is:  Flickr: Help: Photos    Flickr allows for maximum scale images to be posted BUT limits the size of your account; consequently, the VISUAL ARTicle Pro Flickr account serves our group most efficiently when everyone posts images at the recommended Flickr Ideal Standard.
  • When photographing art, your camera should be set to take the largest possible resolution because you can easily reduce an image, but increasing the size  (72ppi to 300ppi) may cause the image to be blurry.
  • Camera manufacturers provide an on-line Users Manual, you can search the manual for recommended camera resolution settings, also look for  “ideal f/stop for best results”.  Read your manual!

MASTER JPG IMAGES – 300ppia master is the original photograph after it has been Photoshop enhanced.

  • Take the best photograph possible and keep enhancements to a minimum
  • Common minor enhancements: cropping, darkening or lightening the exposure, increasing contrast, increasing or decreasing the color vibrance / saturation.
  • We identify masters by adding the image size to the title
  • Example: Katy Fishell ©2010 12  300ppi

TIPS:  Always make changes to a copy of your master image. File the original, a master, and the PSD (Photoshop Document) in a titled and dated folder.  The un-enhanced original is your BACKUP.  Consider the PSD file a lesson in working with your images.  All of the enhancements are listed as actions in Photoshop and you can turn ACTIONS off and on to see how the change effected your original.
