In my work, I try to give paintings life-like qualities through the subjects of my pieces. I use my own photos of people around me to create large and magnified portraits that have a personal feeling to them. I also incorporate inanimate objects into paintings of my family and friends, creating expressive portraits that have character and personality.

What an exciting start to the 2011-2012  IB Visual Arts year.  New art from seniors whose work was previewed in their junior year.  New art from newly transferred senior and junior artists.  New art from new juniors. All of the work is promising, challenging and charging forward to the new National Scholastic Competition.  Ms. Profitt’s visual artists have taken home the silver and the gold in previous years, it will be exciting to see how this new group will do.

Also exciting are four new VISUAL ARTicle blog administers.  Michael Dearborn, Emma Kimbrough, Micah Marcellus Palmer and Savannah Vasos are all HHS IB juniors who have chosen to manage this blog as their two year CAS project.  Very soon you will be hearing their voices and be a witness to how an IB student run blog looks, sounds and reads.

Ron Rice, Vice President of Dury’s Photography, has agreed to partner with Carol Hagen as a local business sponsor of the Hillsboro High School Visual Arts Technology Grant.  Their partnership will expand the grant to include a student discount on all Dury’s photography workshops (up to 50%)  and photography equipment (up to 20%).  Links to a listing of Dury’s photography workshops and special events will appear on VISUAL ARTicles.

Jim Brown, long time Hillsboro High Photography teacher, has been friends with Mr. Rice for twenty years. Our new partnership honors Jim Brown’s contributions to Hillsboro High School as a teacher and the sports and yearbook photographer.  Over the years, Mr. Brown successfully applied for grants to expand the digital and traditional photography labs at Hillsboro High to the benefit of students and staff.  His well attended class has left a vacancy in our arts program and is impacting visual arts students.

Many students took photography with Mr. Brown over the years; last year one of our National Scholastic Art winners, Mitchell Connell, was an American Visual Nominee & was given a Mixed Media Gold Key for his handmade photography book: 444 miles. We have IB juniors this year who walked away from their lottery selection at Hume Fog and the Nashville Arts School to attend the IB Visual Arts program with a focus on photography.  Although very different from taking an on campus course, Dury’s workshops may begin to fill that void.

Mr. Rice and I encourage students to take advantage of Dury’s photography workshops and become part of the Nashville photography community at Dury’s.  Any suggestions on making Dury’s more accessible to Hillsboro students are welcomed.

Patina – for you art newbies – refers to the surface of the classroom walls that are coated with a very light, transparent greenish-gray called patination.  The effect shows up on the digital film as natural signs of aging paint, BUT in the color and tone that most compliments the movie scene.  The result is a subtle warmth that causes the movie viewer to glance at the room, but focus on the lovely Mia Wasikowska as she moves through the room.

For two weeks, Ms. Profitt and art students were secluded in Mr. Brown’s old photography classroom while the film crew equipment occupied the classroom waiting for the day they actually filmed in the art room location; afterwards crews put the classroom back as it was, leaving a piece of Hollywood behind for the teacher’s cooperation.  As Ms. Profitt told Channel 2,  “They let me use some of the wall fixtures they put up and otherwise they put it back just as they found it,” she said.

Wall fixtures refer to the wonderful Eadweard Muybridge birds in flight series left on the walls.  Muybridge’s is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip.  Academic KUDOS! to the Stoker crew’s subtle reference to both art and historic film!  How very IB of you!  Students can click on the links above to learn more about Muybridge’s life and work.

ANNOUNCEMENT:   This is a great kick off to our traditional 5th week start up. Please ask Ms. Profitt how to sign up for the HHS Visual Arts Club. Members will have artwork and artist statements featured art in the VISUAL ARTicle blog.  Much of last year was spent setting up our blog and flickr featured portfolios, this year is all about inserting blog features and assembling a flickr portfolio.

As always, seniors with artwork from their junior year need to sign up for a private photography lesson aka  “How to photograph YOUR art.”  If the world shines down on us, we will have a brilliant new photography set up for students to learn art photography this year.  More on that in our next blog feature.   I can’t wait to meet you!  Carol Hagen, HHS Visual Arts Patron

VISUAL ARTicles Blog and Portfolios are accessed through  published links in our school news papers and articles written about our school and arts programs.  International Baccalaureate students from around the world can visit our site.  Most exciting for our student artists is the exposure to a truly  international community of WordPress.com and Flickr members.  This unique community of international artists, collectors and organizations are able to post comments and invite our students to post their images on other member sites. All comments have been very positive.  Lilly Olney was invited to post her work on an English Watercolor Artist Flickr group site and Mitchell Connell was recognized by a Latin Pin-Hole Photography group site.

An amazing fact about our sister sites is that images on our Flickr Pro Site are viewed 1000 times weekly.  We average 100 to 300 hits per week day and 400-700 hits on the weekend.   Our first experience with international exposure was when our principle, Dr. Shader, traveled to China and offered teachers and students cards with our web site link, suddenly we experienced over 900 views on one day.  Flickr Stats track the number of hits – views – independently and it is interesting to note is that the most viewed images were not the first images to be posted, they are simply the most visited images among our 530 posted works of art.

I.B. Visual Arts -  This course is for juniors and seniors who are interested in obtaining an I.B. Certificate or are fulfilling the I.B. Diploma Group 6 requirement.  The course requires an inquiring and integrated approach towards visual arts in their various historical and contemporary forms.  The I.B. Art course provides students the opportunity to make personal, sociocultural and aesthetic experiences meaningful through the production and understanding of Art. Students must be able to work independently in and out of class.

The Festival of the Arts was a great success and our combined Hillsboro art, photography and music students demonstrated great passion and skill.  The Hillsboro High IB Diploma program is a great source of college scholarships for hard working students who want to attend college.  It is with great pride that we announce a list of universities seeking our 2011 IB graduates and scholarships being offered to them.  I am especially pleased to announce our VISUAL ARTicles associates who have been accepted to study art.

The Festival of the Arts is an annual gathering at Hillsboro High School where students, parents, and the community are welcome to come and enjoy all of the Hillsboro students’ creative abilities. Guests are welcome to view performances by the Hillsboro Chamber Orchestra and Concert Band, the Hillsboro Players, the Sophisticats, and vocal students in. Another main attraction to the Festival of Art is the great Visual Arts program. During and following the auditorium performances, in the small gym, there will be the opportunity to view featured art works created by Hillsboro Visual Arts and Photography students using a wide variety of media which include award winning pieces. Musical entertainment will be provided by Hillsboro students and members of the Hillsboro community. Refreshments will be served in the art exhibit.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My passion for photography began while I was living in an area that had been completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. There was something so beautiful about capturing images where there was nothing left but remnants of peoples lives that had been utterly destroyed by no other than mother nature herself. Soon I realized the people were equally as fascinating if not more. Everyone had a story and getting to know the beautiful people that had been through such a tragic event was the single most amazing experience of my life. The object of my photography, I soon realized, was to capture the beauty in pain.

Photography soon became my life. I wanted to capture every moment, every story, every face. My plan is to make photography a career but more than that, a life style. I never want to grow out of it. My latest captivation is fashion photography.  I want to express myself through my photos, but more than that I want to show you the world through my eyes. This is my life, my passion, my learning experience.

HHS IB Visual Artist brings home National Award

Brittainy Tidwell has won the National Scholastic Silver Medal in Painting for her acrylic figurative artwork titled “Alice”. It was Brittainy’s recognition as the Regional Scholastic Gold Key in Painting recipient that placed her painting  in the national competition for scholastic medals. Brittainy is a 2011 IB Diploma Candidate and VISUAL ARTicles member.

2011 is the second consecutive year for Hillsboro High School IB students to win National Scholastic Arts Medals! Ms. Profitt-Steuli’s mastery of the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts curriculum and her many years of teaching aid her students in mastering art fundamentals.  Seniors are  encouraged  to enter state and national competitions. Marti Profitt-Streuli teaches IB and AP Visual Arts junior and senior students; in addition to Art II, Art I and Life-Skills Art for exceptional education students at Hillsboro High School.
