WORDPRESS.COM vs WORDPRESS.ORG
Hillsboro High School Visual Arts students planning to set up their own blog, please read the comments below. Although not required, I suggest you read FLICKR BASICS and sign up for some Visual Art Club tutoring prior to launching.
- WordPress is a copyright logo used in the service of companion websites, WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
- STUDY BOTH and know the differences before spending any money or time.
WORDPRESS.COM
- VISUAL ARTicle blog is offered through the WordPress.com for FREE.
- If you set up a blog of your own, I strongly recommend you choose WordPress.com and enjoy their robust User Support library and User Forum.
- Each time I have emailed WordPress.com Support I have received a reply within 24 hours, once I received the reply within 8 hours.
- WordPress.com offers 75+ tested blog themes for FREE.
- Any of these themes require either experience and patience OR dedication and patience to set up.
- As an experience web site designer working with a brand new WordPress theme, I plan approximately 50-100 hours to set up, followed by 20-40 hours of tweaking.
- Themes can be as complicated or as simple as you like.
WORDPRESS.ORG
Beta in the computer and internet industry refers to newly introduced programs or systems offered at reduced prices so buyer/users can test the product for the manufacturer. Corrections are made as users file requests for support.
- WordPress.org is not FREE.
- WordPress.org enables blog designers to display for sale beta and tested WordPress Themes.
- The average price of the WordPress.org themes starts at $50. There are no money back guarantees and possibly no written instructions.
- It is important to understand that WordPress.com does enable members to upload purchased themes from WordPress.org.
- HOWEVER, WordPress.com does not employ the freelance designers and does not offer Support for their WordPress.org beta themes.
- Students with novice skills should practice a Buyer Beware philosophy.
WordPress.com / Flickr Conflict DEC. 8, 2010
Deleting a Flickr image that is saved as a displayed image in the Flickr Widget results in locking up the VISUAL ARTicles network that links the WordPress Spectrum Theme to Flickr Photostream.
- REASON: The reason I attempted to delete an image is because the ARTIST STATEMENT image was repeated in the Flickr Widget – Portfolio. I didn’t want two of the same images on one page.
- RESULT: All four of the Feature Artist images in the right column changed in one step. Instead of Katy’s Photostream images, the next set of images – the Young Tennessee Artists booklet – appeared in the Portfolio feature.
- FIRST ATTEMPTED FIX: I attempted to reset Katy’s blog images in the right column by removing the next set of images, the Young Tennessee Artists booklet. This proved to be tired Admin idea that didn’t work.
- SUCCESSFUL FIX: Log out of both sites / log into Flickr / remove only the unwanted image that repeats on the blog home page / log into WordPress to confirm Flickr column is corrected.
- COMMENT: I think the FIX may have worked without deleting the second set of images. Of course, better planning will serve to avoid this dilemma.
